My Stately Neighbor
Once again my state is at the forefront of the news and politics of law enforcement aggression against its own civilians. About a mile from where George Floyd was murdered by law enforcement a Federal, not state this time, official opened fire and murdered Renee Nicole Good. I never met Renee, to my knowledge. I've spent a lot time all over the twin cities metro area for work. Often meeting momentarily all kinds of the general public. It's one small part of what I love about my job. At some point I may have seen her in a store, walking, passed by her on the road, etc. I knew nothing of her and yet my anger and frustration has been boiling for days and days about this.
Her murder alone angers me, the worst part is the blatant lies from all kinds of federal officials trying to cover their own asses because they know it doesn't look good at all. There are many kinds of MAGA aligned people who long ago sold their soul to Trump and will defend him and his administration at any cost. Those have been the most vile in response and the flagrant lies from Trump, Vance, Noem, and all other MAGA administration have done nothing but make the temperature here in Minnesota explode.
The 2020 riots drastically died down when Derek Chauvin was finally arrested. Trump and his cronies are hoping that they can avoid charging the ICE agent who murdered my stately neighbor. There is a lot they can do to aide and abed him from their positions of power. It's unclear what will happen from here. What will happen if the state doesn't charge him at all? What will happen if they do and he's found not guilty? What will happen if they do and the federal government prevents his arrest/tampers with the evidence/investigation? We are (repeatedly) living in unprecedented times.
The future is looking very grim right now, but in the face of adversity we can try to be more like Renee Nicole Good. She did what she thought and knew was right. Innocent people of all kinds are being arrested, treated like garbage, and deported, sometimes not even back to their actual home country. Renee took her frustration and went out there despite the risks. She had no way of knowing that agent would take his pent up frustration out on her, but she did know the risks of interacting with people that have such a disdain for human life that doesn't bow to MAGAs agenda. She died for her belief that people should be treated with humanity, respect, and compassion. Her final moments before being shot were calm and determined. She's only guilty of trying to flee a madman who had already decided he was going to shoot her before she even got out of reverse.
We have a long way to go to end this corruption and it will entail many more challenges but we cannot stop fighting. We stop fighting and they win.
